High-Desert Gardening Basics

Understanding Northern Nevada's climate, growing season and what it means for your yard.

Northern Nevada is a high-desert climate: low humidity, intense sun, cold winters, steady wind and wide day-to-night temperature swings. Gardening here is less about fighting the climate and more about designing for it.

Know Your Zone

Reno-Sparks sits at a high elevation with cold winters. Plant choices must account for cold hardiness as much as drought tolerance — a plant that survives our dry summers can still die in a cold snap.

Sun & Wind

Long summer days and high UV stress plants and hardscape. Wind accelerates drying and makes spray irrigation inefficient. Plan plant placement and irrigation type around exposure.

Water Is the Constraint

Drought and watering rules make efficiency essential. Group plants by water need (hydrozoning) and prefer drip over spray where it makes sense.

Verify With Official Sources

  • Confirm current watering-day rules with your water provider before planting or installing irrigation.
